Bankruptcy debt relief 'easier than before'

It has become easier to opt for bankruptcy debt relief over the years since changes in the law made back in April 2004.

That is according to Paul White, a consultant with Belgravia Insurance Consultants, who said that it "has certainly got a lot easier and there's less stigma attached".

In order to assist people struggling financially and to encourage people to set-up small businesses the law surrounding bankruptcy was amended, and some duration times reduced.

When an individual encounters financial difficulties, Mr White said "we're moving towards a more US approach where people say, 'Well that's unlucky' and give you another try'".

He opined that some 'debt counsellors' tend to "forget which hat they're wearing", something that could prompt consumers to seek debt consolidation alternatives.

Individual voluntary arrangement debt relief have also increased in popularity, Mr White added, as it is often no longer organised face-to-face and is therefore "treated more casually".
